• Some Thoughts about this book~

  1) Story summary:

          The story started with a mystery that an insurance agent, Robert Smith, tried to fly from the roof of Mercy hospital to the opposite shore of Lake Superior, which aligned with a folktale about how African slaves were able to escape by flying back to Africa. The protagonist “Milkman” was born in a high class black family. He saw his parents’ flaws as he grew up and discovered he had a hard time finding his own value. After his father Macon Dead II and his aunt Pilate informed him that there might have gold in a cave in Pennsylvania by the time Milkman was thirty-two years old, Milkman decided to leave his hometown to seek the gold. During his journey, Milkman did not found any gold, but he was interested in looking for his family history instead. The writer utilized Milkman’s 30-year journey to point out the conflicts between wealth and poverty, generation’s gaps, and males and females. She also implied that materialism played an increasingly important role in nowadays society, and implicitly questioned how we should pay more attention to our rootless culture and the lack of awareness about our spiritual lives.

  2) One of the themes: Abandonment and Feminism

          “The fathers may soar, and the children may know their names.” I think this is the most importing theme to this book Song of Solomon. “Flying” has been extensively used throughout the entire novel. As flight has always been seen as a hero type of behavior, it also makes people who are left behind miserable.

          Solomon and Ryna had been slaves on a cotton plantation and had twenty one children. They were Milkman’s great grandparents. When Solomon “flew” away from Virginia, he left his all family, including his wife Ryna and all twenty one children. Ryna became insane after his husband “flew” away. Although the “flying away from slavery” was legendary during that time, it also means that Soloman abandoned his wife and his whole family.

          Milkman, a young black man who grew up in a wealthy family, did not know what to do until the age of thirty. The reason he left his community Not Doctor Street in Michigan was because he wanted to look for the gold in a cave in Pennsylvania. His flight was also selfish because it broke Hagar’s heart. Hagar had been having a sexual relationship with Milkman for many years, and she died eventually because she was abandoned.

          Abandonment and flight seemed always linked together in this novel, however, the author tried to break the relations between these two themes. Another main character, Pilate, as Milkman discovered, was able to fly without any abandonment. Pilate and Milkman’s father were raised on a farm in Pennsylvania, and their father, which is Milkman’s grandfather, was killed when they were still little. Pilate worked diligently as a migrant worker but people were always scared by a woman with no navel. She settled in Virginia Island for a couple of years, and had a child Reba with a good man. Later she moved her whole family to Macon Jr’s town. She did not abandon anyone while she was “flying”. [5](P148)

  3) Novel's Magical Realism

          On the other hand, the author not only used this “flying” as a metaphor, but also made this book Song of Solomon full of magical realistic color. At the very beginning of the book, when the African American insurance agent was trying to fly off the roof of the hospital, almost all of the observers encouraged him rather than prevent him from leaping off, which implied that people did not even realize that he was actually committing suicide. The observers acted as if his flight was possible to carry out.

          Moreover, the people in Shalimar, Virginia, believed that Mr. Solomon actually flew away. These stories bring the novel to magic realism genre because human flights were deemed to be possible and reasonable. Milkman was the only character that discovered only birds and planes could fly in the world, which made him a unique person in the community of the book.

      小说写的是爱尔兰小镇上，20岁的女主人公艾丽斯突然有个机会去美国学习工作。此前，她从来没有离开过母亲，也没有离开过家，虽然她百般留念，但还是去了美国闯一闯。到了美国之后，一切新鲜劲过了之后，她开始思乡，强烈地思乡。美国很好，人也很和善，工作也适应了，只是她想家。咬咬牙关，坚持一下，她开始有了自己的生活，有了新男朋友，此时家又仿佛遥远了。正当一切渐渐安定，她得到一个消息，姐姐去世了，妈妈一人孤苦伶仃，她必须回家。对自己的前途，爱情都还不太确定，她回家前在男友的要求下，仍然秘密结婚了。回到家乡，虽然艾丽斯也就离开1年多的时间，但大家都觉得艾丽斯变了，出落得更漂亮，更有气质，也更有能力了。过了刚到家的适应期后，艾丽斯觉得爱尔兰才是她真正生活的地方，美国虽然好，但那仿佛是一个遥远的梦。在家乡，她过得很舒坦，也有儿时一起长大的朋友，甚至有了新的恋情。但是她就像是只风筝，无论到哪美国有根线牵着她回去。百般无奈，最终艾丽斯还是回到了美国。

      小说最后写道："她回布鲁克林了。这句话对听到它的人意义越来越浅，但对她却越来越重。"在美国的1年多，艾丽斯成长了，变强了，只是被牵扯的线头也更多了。她的决定，无论是起先要去美国闯荡，还是结婚，抑或是回国，最后又是再去美国，每一个决定都是命运使然。艾丽斯是被生活携卷而去的。于她而言，每一次又是多么的无奈。然而即使这样，我们的女主人公仍很坚强：刚到美国，她思乡，但她坚持好好上班，努力学习；在姐姐墓前，她太痛苦了，但是她没有哭；她离开，回美国去，她不舍，但还是买了船票。

      我们不能掌控命运把我们带向何处，只能学习着和命运妥协的技艺。
